Pope Francis is still fighting for his life as blood tests show early kidney failure but officials say he is ‘alert’
Officials have mentioned that Pope Francis was in a critical but alert state after a blood test showed symptoms of early kidney failure as of Sunday.

In a late report, the Vatican said that at 88, the pontiff was still ‘well oriented’ and attended Sunday Mass, while fighting pneumonia and a severe lung infection.
In addition, the Pope had no more respiratory crises since Saturday night but still requires high flow oxygen supplementation.
According to the doctors, while some blood tests indicated “initial, mild, kidney failure”, they added that this was under control.
Also, the reduction of the platelets had been first noticed on Saturday, required for clotting, but now it is stable.

‘The complexity of the clinical picture, and the necessary wait for drug therapies to provide some feedback, dictate that the prognosis remains reserved,’ the doctors concluded.
Earlier today, the Pope thanked doctors from his hospital bed and people sending ‘prayers of comfort’ from far and wide.

‘I am confidently continuing my hospitalisation at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment – and rest is also part of the therapy!’ the pontiff wrote in a statement.
