A high school female runner gets smacked by a baton in a relay race after she passed her competitor

Wild moment at the VHSL Class 3 State Indoor Meet. A runner in the girls’ 4×200 relay clubs an opponent in the head with a baton mid-race. Both teams were disqualified.

Everett and Kaelen Tucker, a junior at Brookville High School, were competing in a 4×200-meter relay when they nearly collided while rounding a curve on the track.

Tucker suffered a concussion and a possible skull fracture as a result of the encounter. She and her family are awaiting an apology from Everett and her coach.

Tucker explained that, “When we got to the curve she kept bumping me in my arm and when we got off the curve I finally passed her and that was when she hit me with the baton.”

Everett also explained that the incident was accidental, saying, “My baton got stuck behind her back and rolled up her back. I lost my balance when I pumped my arms again.”

The Virginia High School League says it is investigating the incident. Kaelen and her family are awaiting an apology from Everett and her coach.
