On Wednesday, a jury awarded Johnny Depp $15 million in damages in his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
In his defamation claim, Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard was also given $2 million in compensatory damages by the jury.
On Friday, a jury in Fairfax, Virginia, began deliberations.
After writing an op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018, Depp sued Heard for $50 million, claiming she was a “public figure symbolizing domestic abuse.” Depp was countersued for $100 million by Heard.
Amber Heard reacts to verdict: ‘I’m heartbroken’
Heard released a statement Wednesday afternoon reacting to the jury siding with her ex-husband Johnny Depp:
“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.
I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.
I believe Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK.
I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American — to speak freely and openly.”
Jurors award $2 million to Amber Heard
Heard was also given $2 million in compensatory damages by the seven-person jury, but no punitive damages.

Depp wins defamation suit against ex-wife Heard
On Wednesday afternoon, a jury in Northern Virginia found in favor of Johnny Depp, ruling that his former wife Amber Heard defamed him by falsely accusing him of domestic abuse.
Depp is suing for $50 million in damages after Heard claimed she had become a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in a 2018 opinion-editorial column in The Washington Post.
Despite the fact that the essay did not reference Depp by name, his lawyers claim it alluded to claims she made against him during their 2016 divorce.
Amber Heard’s net worth in 2022
It’s unclear how much money Heard has. Heard’s net worth is reported to be US$8 million ($12.3 million) by Fox Business, and US$2.5 million ($3.86 million) by Celebrity Net Worth.
The couple’s finances have been revealed in the defamation trial, with Heard earning US$10 million in gross revenue between 2013 and 2019.
Her ex-claimed husband’s net worth is a mind-boggling US$150 million ($231 million), which is a stark difference.
But, unlike Depp’s long-running career, Heard’s had just recently achieved her first great triumph when the legal disputes began.
She began her career as a model in New York before moving to Los Angeles, where she appeared in music videos and minor roles in TV shows such as Jack & Bobby, The Mountain, and The OC.
According to IMDB, she made her debut film appearance in Friday Night Lights (2004), and then went on to have an up-and-down career with 51 acting credits.
Her first main role was in the flop All the Boys Love Mandy Lane in 2006, although she is most known for playing Seth Rogen’s younger love interest in Pineapple Express, a cameo in Zombieland, and a supporting role in The Rum Diary, where she met Depp.
Heard landed her biggest role to date, Mera, in the 2018 blockbuster Aquaman, after a succession of minor appearances in 2015, including Magic Mike XXL and The Danish Girl.
Heard was paid US$1 million for the part and was paid US$2 million for the 2023 sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom once the picture grossed US$1 billion worldwide. Her continued involvement in the project has prompted millions of people to join a petition demanding that her character be recast.
Heard has 31 professional modeling credits, including Guess ads, a global ambassadorship with L’Oreal Paris (for US$1.625 million), and work with the Cannes Film Festival and Harper’s Bazaar, among others.
How does she compare to Depp?
Johnny Depp has been performing for nearly as long as his ex-wife has been alive, and during that time he has collected a staggering amount of wealth, including foreign real estate, enterprises, and vintage automobiles.
He has been called the “most overpaid” actor by Forbes on two occasions, since he requests upwards of US$20 million per acting contract.
Depp is still worth an eye-watering US$150 million, compared to Heard’s US$2.5 million, despite blowing much of his excessive money in 2016.
What did Heard get in the divorce?
He didn’t give her half of his income, as he promised to his 14-year spouse and mother of his children, French model Vanessa Paradis, when they divorced.
Despite earning a US$7 million settlement in 2016, she pledged to donate the money to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union. She merely donated a small amount of the monies, according to court documents.
Depp kept all of his foreign real estate assets, including the private island where they married, and his vintage automobile collection after their divorce was finalized in 2017. Meanwhile, Heard walked away from the scene with two terriers, a horse, and two automobiles.
Heard filed for spousal support after their divorce, requesting US$50,000 per month to pay a variety of expenses, including US$10,000 for rent, US$2000 for dining out, and US$10,000 for pet supplies and legal fees.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, she said she was only making a tiny income at the time, including US$27,000 in film royalties, and that her savings totaled barely US$25,000. Later, she retracted her assertion.
What about Johnny’s other exes?
Heard’s finances pale in comparison to those of his prior exes, including Vanessa Paradis, Kate Moss, and his original inspiration Winona Ryder (who is worth a solid US$18 million).
Vanessa Paradis has a net worth of US$100 million as of 2022, after a long and successful career in singing, acting, and modeling.
Kate Moss, the iconic British supermodel from the 1990s who testified in this newest defamation lawsuit, is estimated to be worth $70 million.
Heard is reported to be worth US$2.5 million.
As the court drama unfolds, one thing is certain: the trial’s final result will have a tremendous influence on both Depp and Heard’s life, particularly Heard’s.
