Bill Stepien is an American political consultant who began serving as Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign manager in July of that year. He was the White House Director of Political Affairs in the Trump administration from 2017 to 2018. He is a Republican.
Stepien ran both of Chris Christie’s gubernatorial campaigns and served as his Deputy Chief of Staff before being fired in 2014 after Christie said he “lost confidence” in Stepien’s judgment for his role in the Fort Lee lane closure scandal, also known as Bridgegate, in which Stepien approved of the action, which was intended to embarrass a Democratic mayor.
Stepien attended West Morris Central High School and Rutgers University in New Jersey after being born into a Polish and German family. Stepien got his start in politics by working on Anthony Bucco’s State Senate campaign in 1997 and Bob Franks’ U.S. Senate campaign in 2000. Before organizing Bill Baroni’s 2003 campaign for New Jersey State Assembly, he worked for Public Opinion Strategies and DuHaime Communications, and was the only Republican to defeat a Democratic incumbent that year.
Stepien was the Political Director of the Bush/Cheney campaign in New Hampshire in 2004 and the Director of the RNC’s 72-Hour Campaign in 2005 and 2006. He worked as a Regional Campaign Manager for Senator John S. McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008 before becoming National Field Director for New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign in 2007-08. In the 2016 Presidential Campaign, he played the same position for Presidential hopeful Donald Trump.
