Burna Boy: Biography of Nigerian Singer

Burna Boy is among top rated Nigerian singers of all time by his exploit in the music scene over the last decade.

Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu on July 2nd 1991 at Port Harcourt Nigeria, Burna Boy is Nigerian Grammy award winning singer and songwriter.

His mother Bose Ogulu was a translator and his father managed a welding company.

His grandfather Benson Idonije once managed Fela Kuti an indication that his family has the lineage to making music.

As a child Burna Boy had his secondary education at Corona Secondary school in his home country Nigeria before relocating to United Kingdom to further his studies at University of Sussex.

He is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most successful African artistes even though he’s relatively young in the music industry with his career spanning from 2011 till date.

Burna Boy rose to prominence in 2012 after releasing his debut hit single “Like to Party”

After releasing his debut studio album titled “LIFE” in 2013, The “Ye” hitmaker has remained focused and determine breaking barriers and hence pushing his craft to the global stage wining multiple awards in the process.

In 2017 for instance, Burna Boy signed a mouthwatering deal with American Atlantic records.

Two years on in 2019, he was adjudged the Best International Act at the 2019 held Black Entertainment Television(BET) awards.

He followed up by releasing what was his 4th Album titled “African Giant” which was released in July 2019.

The album won the Album of the year at the 2019 held All African Music Awards.

The “big thing” was indeed getting closer as the “African Giant” album got nominated at the 62nd held Grammy awards.

That was a Giant leap even though he didn’t not win that category, getting nominated in itself was technically a win.

In 2020, his won the African Artiste of the year at Ghana’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards held in Accra.

The “Twice As Tall” album landed him his second Grammy Award nomination a the 63rd Held award in Los Angeles.

This Nomination made him the first Nigerian artiste in history to land back to back Grammy award nominations both coming in 2019 where he lost to singe Angèlique Kidjo and 2020 which he eventually won.

The Twice as Tall album eventually won the Best World Music Album at the 63rd Grammy awards.

Burna Boy’s career has indeed been fascinating and his songs such as “Ye, On the Low, Anybody” among others remains some of his top hit songs.
