Cate was born on 14 May 1969, in Ivanhoe, Melourne. She is the second child of her parents. She has 2 siblings, a brother, and a sister. Her parents are June Gamble (mother)and Robert DeWitt Blanchett (father).

She attended Ivanhoe East Primary School and Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School and later Methodist Ladies College. She dropped out of the University of Melbourne to travel abroad. In 1992, she finally graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the National Institute of Dramatic Art.
