According to a recent story, the Washington Post has suspended reporter Dave Weigel after the reporter shared a sexist joke from another Twitter user last week.
On Monday, CNN reported that the Message has suspended Weigel, a famous campaign reporter who generated public outrage last week after retweeting a post from YouTube personality Cam Harless, who said, “Every girl is bi. All you have to do now is figure out whether it’s polar or sexual.”
After another reporter at the outlet, Felicia Sonmez, brought attention to Weigel’s retweet, Weigel deleted it and apologized.
Sonmez reportedly tagged Weigel in an internal business Slack chat and asked, “I’m sorry but what is this?” according to CNN. She went on to say that his retweet of the joke sends “a mixed message about the Post’s beliefs.”
“I just want to assure all of you that The Post is committed to preserving a respectful workplace for everyone,” Post national editor Matea Gold reportedly wrote on Slack during the debate. We will not allow derogatory words or behavior.”
Sally Buzbee, the executive editor, wrote to the whole staff on Sunday, requesting that employees treat one another with “respect and love.”
Sonmez retaliated by posting a screenshot of Buzbee’s message to employees, claiming that it gave “fodder for more harassment” of female employees.
