On Monday, Israel hit out at Russia over its foreign minister’s “unforgivable” remarks on Nazism and antisemitism, including claims that Adolf Hitler was Jewish. In response, Israel summoned Russia’s envoy, claiming that the remarks condemned Jews for their own deaths during the Holocaust.

It was a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries at a time when Israel was attempting to carve out a neutral position between Russia and Ukraine in order to remain in Russia’s good graces for its Middle East security needs.

Who was Adolf Hitler?

Adolf Hitler was an Austrian-born German politician who served as Germany’s dictator from 1933 to 1945. He rose to prominence as the leader of the Nazi Party, first as the chancellor in 1933 and then as Führer und Reichskanzler in 1934.

He started World War II in Europe during his rule by invading Poland on September 1, 1939. Throughout the war, he was intimately involved in military operations and played a key role in the Holocaust, the killing of approximately six million Jews and millions of other victims.

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in Braunau am Inn, Austria-Hungary (present-day Austria), near the German Empire’s border. He was the fourth of Alois Hitler’s six children born to his third wife, Klara Pölzl. Gustav, Ida, and Otto, three of Hitler’s siblings, perished as children.

Alois’s children from his second marriage, Alois Jr. (born 1882) and Angela, also lived in the house (born 1883). Hitler’s family moved to Passau, Germany, when he was three years old.

It was there that he picked up the peculiar lower Bavarian accent, rather than Austrian German, that would define his speech for the rest of his life.

In 1894, the family moved to Austria and settled in Leonding, and Alois retired to Hafeld, near Lambach, in June 1895, where he farmed and kept bees. Hitler went to Fischlham Volksschule (a state-funded primary school).

Did Hitler have kids?

Adolf Hitler never had any daughter. He never had any children.

Hitler created a public image as a celibate man without a domestic life, dedicated entirely to his political mission and the nation. He met his lover, Eva Braun, in 1929, and married her on 29 April 1945, one day before they both committed suicide.

In September 1931, his half-niece, Geli Raubal, took her own life with Hitler’s gun in his Munich apartment. It was rumoured among contemporaries that Geli was in a romantic relationship with him, and her death was a source of deep, lasting pain.

Paula Hitler, the younger sister of Hitler and the last living member of his immediate family, died in June 1960.
