He wanted his family to benefit from the $2.5 million in life insurance coverage that Federal Express had provided. Calloway attempted in vain to assassinate the crew. Despite suffering severe injuries, the team battled back, defeated Calloway, and successfully landed the plane.
The Implications of the Federal Express Flight 705 Hijacking
The decision was finally made to allow FedEx 705 to land on any available runway. In addition to safely landing the aircraft, the flight crew’s valiant efforts also allowed them to hold Auburn Calloway until law enforcement personnel boarded the aircraft in Memphis and arrested him.
Because of the severity of their brain damage, Jim Tucker, Andy Peterson, and David Sanders were never again allowed to fly. Auburn Calloway was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release. He is serving time in prison in California and uses his website to contest his conviction.
Less than 30 minutes into the flight, Calloway opened his guitar case and took out a claw hammer, hitting the pilot, first officer, and flight engineer in the head.
