In the 2019 Sunday Times Rich List, John was projected to have a fortune of £320 million, making him one of the top ten wealthiest people in the British music industry.
John owns homes in Atlanta, London, Los Angeles, Nice, and Venice, in addition to his main estate, Woodside, in Old Windsor, Berkshire. On the Mont Boron, he owns a property in Nice. John is an art collector who is thought to own one of the world’s largest private photography collections.
John admitted to spending £30 million in just under two years, or £1.5 million a month, in 2000. He spent more than £9.6 million on property and £293,000 on flowers between January 1996 and September 1997.
In June 2001, John sold 20 of his automobiles at Christie’s, claiming that he had never had the opportunity to drive them due to his many trips out of the country. The auction raised approximately £2 million, with the most expensive car being a 1993 Jaguar XJ220, which sold for £234,750, as well as various Ferraris, Rolls-Royces, and Bentleys.
John sold the contents of his Holland Park home in 2003, expecting £800,000 at Sotheby’s, in order to modernize the interior and display some of his contemporary art collection. Since 2004, John has created a “Elton’s Closet” boutique in which he sells his used clothing every year.
John was named in the Pandora Papers in October 2021, which suggest a secret financial transaction involving politicians and celebrities utilizing tax havens to avoid paying back taxes.
Who is Elton John?
Elton John is an English vocalist, pianist, and composer who was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947. John has had a commercially successful solo career since the 1970s, having released 31 albums since 1969. He is known as the “Rocket Man” after his 1972 hit single of the same name.
John has been collaborating with lyricist Bernie Taupin since 1967, and he is praised by critics and artists for his work in the 1970s, as well as his continuing influence on the music industry. John’s songs and stage presence have had a huge influence on mainstream music. One of the most successful songwriting collaborations in history is with Taupin.
Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex, to Stanley Dwight (1925–1991) and Sheila Eileen (née Harris; 1925–2017), and was reared by his maternal grandparents in a council house in Pinner. In 1945, his parents married, and the family relocated to a nearby semi-detached house.
He attended Pinner Wood Junior School, Reddiford School, and Pinner County Grammar School until he was 17, when he dropped out right before his A-Level exams to pursue a music career.
Elton John Spouse timeline
John was engaged to his first lover, secretary Linda Woodrow, in the late 1960s, and the song “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” mentions her. At the time, Woodrow supported John and Taupin financially. Following the advice of Taupin and Long John Baldry, John ended the relationship two weeks before their planned wedding. Despite having lost contact with Woodrow 50 years prior, John helped pay for her medical bills in 2020 when she requested it.
He lost his virginity to and began his first gay relationship with John Reid, the Tamla Motown label manager for the UK, who eventually became John’s manager, in 1970, shortly after his first US gigs in Los Angeles. Although Reid remained his manager until 1998, the relationship terminated five years later.
On February 14, 1984, John married German recording engineer Renate Blauel in a lavish wedding ceremony in Darling Point, New South Wales, Australia.
Blauel claimed she tried to commit suicide on their honeymoon in St. Tropez after John told her he wanted to end their relationship.
In 1988, their marriage terminated in divorce. As John put it, “She was the most refined woman I’d ever encountered, but it wasn’t meant to be. I was deceiving myself.” Blauel sued John in 2020, alleging that he broke the conditions of their divorce agreement by writing about their relationship in his 2019 autobiography, Me: Elton John Official Autobiography. Later that year, the dispute was settled.
In a 1976 interview with Rolling Stone, John revealed that he was bisexual, and in a 1992 interview with the magazine, he stated that he was “very comfortable about being gay.”
In 1993, John started dating David Furnish, a former advertising executive who is now a filmmaker from Toronto. John and Furnish were among the first couples in the United Kingdom to create a civil partnership, which took place in the Windsor Guildhall on December 21, 2005 (the day the Civil Partnership Act went into effect). Following the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United Kingdom in March 2014, John and Furnish married on December 21, 2014, the ninth anniversary of their civil partnership, in Windsor, Berkshire.
Furnish and John have two sons. Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, the elder, was born in California via surrogacy on December 25, 2010. Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John, the younger, was born on the same surrogate on January 11, 2013. Sean Lennon, David and Victoria Beckham’s sons Brooklyn and Romeo, Elizabeth Hurley’s son Damian Hurley, and Seymour Stein’s daughter are among John’s ten godchildren.
Some Christian organizations in the United States chastised John in 2010 after he depicted Jesus as a “compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human issues.” Bill Donohue, head of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights and a vocal opponent of gay marriage, had this to say: “Jesus is a sexual deviant, so calling him a homosexual is a derogatory term. What else would we expect from a man who earlier stated, “From my point of view, I would fully outlaw religion.”” In his 2019 autobiography, Me, John revealed that his views had resulted in numerous death threats. After posting a YouTube video declaring, “We’re here today to remind Elton John that he has to die,” Neal Horsley, a Christian Reconstructionist from Bremen, Georgia, was jailed for making terrorist threats. After that, the accusations were dropped.
In 2008, John stated that he favored civil partnerships over marriage for gay people, but by 2012, he had changed his mind and was now a supporter of same-sex marriage in the UK. According to John,
“There is a world of difference between calling someone your ‘partner’ and calling them your ‘husband’. ‘Partner’ is a word that should be preserved for people you play tennis with, or work alongside in business. It doesn’t come close to describing the love that I have for David, and he for me. In contrast, ‘husband’ does”.
In 2014, he claimed Jesus would have been in favour of same-sex marriage.
