Earvin Magic Johnson Jr. popularly known as Magic Johnson, born on August 14, 1959, is an American former professional basketball player. Johnson has been regard as the greatest point guard of all time. He played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
After Johnson had won championships in high school and college, he was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Johnson led the Lakers to five NBA championships during his era.
In the year 1991 after it was announced that Johnson had contracted HIV, he retired, but he returned to the play the 1982 All-Star Game, of which he won the All-Star MVP Award.
After some few protests from his fellow players, Johnson retired again for four good years, but returned again in 1996 when he was 36 to further play 32 games for the Lakers before his third and final retirement.
Johnson was honored as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996 ansmd he was selected to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, and he became a two-time inductees into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame being enshrined in 2002 for his individual career, and again in2010 ad a member of the Dream Team.
After Johnson’s third and final retirement from the Lakers, he has become an advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and safe sex. Johnson is also an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, philanthropist, and broadcaster.
Being named by the Ebony magazine as one of the America’s most influential black businessmen in 2009, Johnson developed numerous interests of business. He was a part-owner of the Lakers for many years, he was as well the team’s president from 2017 to 2019.
Johnson is also part of a group of investors that purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 and the Los Angeles Sparks in 2014.
During his time of ownership of both teams, the Sparks won the 2016 WNBA Championship, and the Dodgers also won the 2020 World Series. Combining Johnson’s career and sports ownership career, Johnson has 10 NBA championships, five each as a player and later as a minority-owner of the Lakers.
