It is very unlikely that the Zodiac Killer is still alive. It is believed that the Zodiac Killer is dead. He stopped attacks in 1969.
The only suspect in the case, Arthur Leigh Allen, also died in 1992. Arthur was a former elementary school teacher and convicted sex offender who died in 1992.
The killer also ceased communications in 1974. Nothing was heard from him since he ceased communications. Due to the long silence from the Zodiac Killer, it is assumed that he is dead.
The real identity of the Zodiac Killer was never confirmed. Only two of his ciphers have been solved. The first cipher was solved in 2020.
A special investigation team also identified a man called Gary Francis Post as the Zodiac Killer. Gary also died in 2018.
As of 2022, some police departments in the US have the case of the Zodiac Killer still open. The San Francisco Police Department marked the case “inactive” in April 2004 but re-opened it at some point before March 2007.
The case also remains open in the city of Vallejo, as well as in Napa County and Solano County. The California Department of Justice has maintained an open case file on the Zodiac murders since 1969.
