Neal Adams, the iconic comic book artist who breathed new life into Batman and other superheroes with his photorealistic style and championed creators’ rights, has passed away. He was 80 years old.

Adams died of sepsis complications in New York on Thursday, according to his wife, Marilyn Adams of The Hollywood Reporter.

Adams’ toned and sinewy take on heroes shook the world of comic books in the late 1960s and early 1970s, first at DC with a character named Deadman, then at Marvel with X-Men and The Avengers, and finally with Batman, his most lasting influence.

Neal Adams was an American actor and writer. was a comic book artist from the United States. He was a co-founder of Continuity Associates, a graphic design business, and a creators-rights champion who helped Superman founders Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster get a pension and respect. Adams co-created the DC Comics characters Ra’s al Ghul, Man-Bat, and John Stewart during his career.

Adams was admitted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame by the Eisner Awards in 1998, the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame by the Harvey Awards in 1999, and the Inkwell Awards’ Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame by the Inkwell Awards in 2019.

Neal Adams was born on Governors Island in New York City on June 15, 1941.

He was born into a military family and grew up on army bases all around the world, from Brooklyn to Germany.
