John Squire is an English musician, composer, and artist who was born on November 24, 1962. He was the guitarist for The Stone Roses, a rock band with whom he collaborated on songs with lead singer Ian Brown.
He founded The Seahorses after quitting the Stone Roses and has since released two solo albums. Squire stopped playing music in 2007 to focus solely on painting. However, when the Stone Roses reassembled in 2011, he returned to music.
Squire is recognized for his chiming melodies, spiraling riffs, and live solos, and has been called one of the most proficient and influential British rock guitarists of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In a national poll conducted by BBC 6 Music in 2010, he was rated the 13th greatest guitarist of the last 30 years.
Squire was born in the Cheshire town of Broadheath.
Squire grew up around the corner from Ian Brown on Sylvan Avenue in Timperley, and after attending Heyes Lane Junior School, he passed the eleven plus test and went on to Altrincham Grammar School for Boys. He was a natural artist as a child.
After Ian Brown supported him in a fight with a school bully during their last two years at school together, he became a strong bond with him. The two became closer as a result of their mutual love of punk rock, notably the Clash.
After passing their O-Levels, Squire and Brown went on to South Trafford College. Brown was expelled, and Squire dropped out to form a band shortly after. Squire was mostly self-taught, with the exception of a few guitar lessons.
