Man steals and swallows earrings worth $769K at Tiffany & Co. in Florida

Jaythan Gilder, 32, stole two pairs of diamond earrings from the Tiffany & Co. store at the Mall at Millenia in Orlando on Feb. 26, a spokesperson for the Orlando Police Department.

According to an arrest affidavit, police stated that Gilder accessed the jewelry by impersonating a representative of an Orlando Magic player who was interested in making a purchase, and he was taken to a VIP room to view the earrings.

In surveillance footage shared by police, Gilder is seen grabbing jewelry from a counter in the store and attempting to leave the room. He is also accused of stealing a ring worth $587,000.

“Gilder forcefully took the earrings and resisted an employee’s attempts to stop him,” police told PEOPLE. “Gilder then ran out of the store and into the parking lot, where he got into a vehicle and fled.”

Detectives identified the suspect’s getaway vehicle, which was found on Interstate 10 in Washington County, heading towards Texas, by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

A body scan conducted in jail confirmed investigators’ suspicions, revealing “foreign objects” in Gilder’s stomach, which they believed to be the missing earrings.

Gilder was charged with first-degree grand theft and robbery with a mask. He also has 48 outstanding warrants out of Colorado. According to an outlet, the suspect has been arrested multiple times for theft over the last 13 years.
