José Mourinho is the current head coach of Italian Serie A club Roma. He is a Portuguese professional football manager and former player. He is known as “The Special One” and is largely regarded as one of the best managers of all time, as well as one of the most decorated.
Mourinho was born in 1963 in Setbal (a suburb of the Lisbon metropolitan area), Portugal, to a large middle-class family. He was the son of José Manuel Mourinho Félix, also known as Félix Mourinho, and his wife Maria Jlia Carrajola dos Santos.
His father was a professional footballer who played for Os Belenenses and Vitória de Setbal, collecting one cap for Portugal throughout his career. His mother was an affluent elementary school teacher, and her uncle paid for the Vitória de Setbal football stadium to be built. The family lost all but one home in nearby Palmela as António de Oliveira Salazar’s Estado Novo regime fell apart in April 1974.
Mourinho joined the Belenenses youth team to follow in his father’s footsteps. He played senior football with Rio Ave (where his father was the coach), Belenenses, and Sesimbra. He lacked the speed and power to play professionally, so he decided to pursue a career as a football coach instead.
Mourinho’s mother enrolled him in a business school, but he pulled out on the first day, saying he wanted to focus on sport instead, and chose to study sports science at the Instituto Superior de Educaço Fsica (ISEF), Technical University of Lisbon.
Former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh noticed the young Portuguese’s energy and attention to detail after attending coaching seminars run by the English and Scottish Football Associations. By combining coaching theory with motivational and psychological approaches, Mourinho tried to rethink the position of coach in football.
Meet José Mourinho’s children
Matilde Mourinho, Jose Mario Mourinho Jr. are José Mourinho’s children.
Who is Matilde Faria, José Mourinho’s beautiful Wife?
Mourinho met his Angola-born wife Matilde “Tami” Faria when they were both youngsters in Setbal, Portugal, and they married in 1989. Matilde, their first child, was born in 1996, and José Mário Jr, their first son, was born four years later.
Mourinho, whilst dedicated to football, describes his family as the centre of his life and has said that the “most important thing is my family and being a good father.” He was selected as the New Statesman Man of the Year 2005 and was described as a man devoted to both his family and his work.
His wife has had a significant impact on his career, even persuading him to turn down an England job.
Mourinho said of that decision in 2014: “Lampard, Terry, Joe Cole, everybody, was saying, ‘Come, come, come.
“My players said, ‘The guys from Manchester United and Liverpool call us and say to us: Tell your boss to come.’ I had lots of positive things to push me.
“My wife told me not to take it and she was right.
“It was the right decision. We are talking about seven years ago … and I cannot wait two years for a big competition. I cannot be spending two years playing against Kazakhstan and San Marino.
“And she was right. It was not the job for me seven years ago, it’s not the job for me now and I don’t think it will be the job for me in seven years’ time. Maybe in 15 years from now but not seven.”
Mourinho also said of his wife: “The secret in everything is love. If you are successful in any job, I believe it is because you are in love with that job.
“And if you have a successful family it is because people are in love with each other. Love is the basic.”
After appearing on Sky Sports sans his wedding ring, the Portuguese manager sparked rumors of a break between the two.
This came 11 months after his secret friendship with a blonde 14 years his junior was discovered.
Mourinho’s choice to join Tottenham appears to be aimed at securing his family life, as his wife and children currently reside in the capital.
How many children do they have?
From their nearly 30-year marriage, JOSE and Matilde had two children.
Matilde, their daughter, was born in 1996, and Jose Mario Jr, their son, was born in 2000.
Jose was signed by Fulham in 2017, but he is now a free agent.
Mourinho got the names of Tami and their children Matilde and Jose Jr. tattooed on his bicep in 2013.
