The senior United States senator from Wisconsin is Ronald Harold Johnson (born April 8, 1955), an American accountant, businessman, and politician. Johnson, a Republican, defeated Democratic incumbent Russ Feingold in his first election to the Senate in 2010. In 2016, he defeated Feingold in a rematch to win reelection. Johnson headed a polyester and plastics firm that his brother-in-law had built before he entered politics.
Johnson, a steadfast supporter of President Donald Trump, supported his decision to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), launched investigations into his political rivals, and promoted false allegations of fraud in connection with Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election. Johnson also voted in favor of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017.
He disregarded the consensus among scientists regarding climate change. Johnson supported the CARES Act during the COVID-19 pandemic, disobeyed warnings to stay at home, used his position as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee to invite witnesses to forward unproven COVID-19 ideas, and disseminated false information about COVID-19 immunizations.
Johnson lives in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, with his wife Jane.
They have four grandchildren as well as three children who are all University of Wisconsin grads. The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod is where he belongs.
