Ralf Rangnick is a German professional football manager, executive, and former player who now serves as the coach of the Austrian national team.
Rangnick began his coaching career in 1983, at the age of 25, after finishing his playing career. He was hired by former club Ulm 1846 in 1997, where he won the Regionalliga Süd in his first season. Rangnick was later hired by VfB Stuttgart of the Bundesliga, where he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000 before being fired in 2001. He then joined Hannover 96, where he won the 2. Bundesliga, but was fired in 2004. Rangnick joined 1899 Hoffenheim in 2006 after a brief stint with Schalke 04, and has since achieved successive promotions to the Bundesliga. In 2011, he left the club and returned to Schalke 04, where he won the 2011 DFB-Pokal and reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Between 2015 and 2019, he was the head coach of RB Leipzig for two seasons.
Rangnick joined Red Bull as director of football in 2012, assisting with the club’s growth into Europe, emphasizing the signing of unproven players and the development of youth systems with a global scouting foundation and an offensive on-pitch mentality across all of their teams.
As a result, the market value of Red Bull clubs increased from €120 million to €1.2 billion during his tenure.
Their clubs have also enjoyed consistent domestic success and profited handsomely from player transfers, leading to Rangnick’s promotion to head of sport and development in 2019.
In 2020, he resigned from Red Bull and in 2021, he became the manager of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia. Rangnick was named temporary manager of Manchester United till the end of the 2021–22 season later that year.
Backnang is where Rangnick was born and raised. Dietrich and Erika Rangnick met in the Ore Mountains of Lichtenstein, Saxony, in 1945. His father is from Königsberg, while his mother is from Breslau (now Wrocaw, Poland).
Rangnick began his playing career with VfB Stuttgart, but his strategic abilities were noticed, and he was promoted to player-coach. His playing career was brief, as he spent most of it in Germany, but he did spend time at English team Southwick while attending the University of Sussex.
