Marine Le Pen (born August 5, 1968) is a French lawyer and politician who stood for President of France in 2012, 2017, and 2022. She was the president of the National Rally (RN; previously the National Front, FN) from 2011 to 2021. She has been a member of the National Assembly for the Pas-de-Calais 11th constituency since 2017. On the political spectrum, she has been labeled as far-right.
She is the niece of former FN MP Marion Maréchal and the youngest daughter of former party leader Jean-Marie Le Pen.
In 1986, Le Pen joined the FN. She served as a regional councillor in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais (1998–2004; 2010–2015), Île-de-France (2004–2010), and Hauts-de-France (2015–2021), as well as a Member of the European Parliament (2004–2017) and a municipal councillor in Hénin-Beaumont (2008–2011). She defeated Bruno Gollnisch for the presidency of the FN in 2011, receiving 67.6% of the vote, and succeeding her father, who had led the party since its founding in 1972.
She came in third place in the presidential election in 2012, with 17.9% of the vote, behind François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.
She ran for president for the second time in the 2017 election. With 21.3 percent of the vote in the first round, she was pitted against Emmanuel Macron of the centrist En Marche! party in the second round of voting. After getting about 33.9 percent of the vote in the second round, she conceded on May 7, 2017.
In 2020, she announced her third presidential bid for the 2022 election. She finished second in the first round of the election, qualifying her for the second round against Macron, but she lost to Macron in the second round.
