Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri [June 19, 1951 – July 31, 2022)[was an Egyptian-born physician, theologian and terrorist.
He became the leader of al-Qaeda in June 2011 succeeding Osama bin Laden, who was killed by the US Navy in Pakistan. In July 2022, al-Zawahiri was also killed by the US, in a drone strike in Afghanistan.
Al-Zawahiri was previously a senior member of Islamist organizations which led attacks in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. In 2012, al-Zawahiri called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners in Muslim countries.
After the September 11 attacks, the U.S. State Department offered a US$25 million reward for information or intelligence leading to Ayman al-Zawahiri’s capture.He was put under worldwide sanctions in 1999 by the UN’s Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee as a member of Al-Qaeda.
