Former Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch, who played a pivotal role in major tax, civil-rights and healthcare legislation over more than four decades, died on Saturday, his foundation said. He was 88 years old.
Who is Orrin Hatch?
Orrin Hatch (March 22, 1934 – April 23, 2022) was an American lawyer and politician who represented Utah in the United States Senate from 1977 to 2019. Hatch was the longest-serving Republican senator in history, having served in the Senate for 42 years. From 1981 until 1987, Hatch was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
From 1995 to 2001, and again from 2003 to 2005, he chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee. He was sworn in as president pro tempore of the Senate on January 3, 2015, after the 114th United States Congress was sworn in. From 2015 until 2019, he chaired the Senate Finance Committee, where he oversaw the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
On August 28, 1957, Hatch married Elaine Hansen. They were the parents of six children; Scott Hatch, Alysa Hatch, Jesse Hatch, Marcia Hatch, Brent Hatch, and Kimberly Hatch.
