Alfred Giovanni Roncalli Boe OBE (born September 29, 1973) is an English tenor and actor who is most known for his work in musical theater.

He is best known for his roles as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre in London, as well as the 25th Anniversary Concert, the 2014 Broadway revival, and the All-Star Staged Concert. Beginning March 29, 2016, he portrayed the lead role in Finding Neverland on Broadway.

In addition, Boe and the other members of the ensemble cast of Baz Luhrmann’s 2002 revival of La bohème shared a Tony Award in 2003. In the United Kingdom, he has sold over one million albums.

Boe was born in Blackpool, Lancashire, and raised in Fleetwood, the youngest in a family of nine children.

He has Irish and Norwegian ancestors. His mother and father named him after Pope John XXIII’s Italian name. He went at Fleetwood’s St Wulstan’s and St Edmund’s School and Cardinal Allen Catholic High School. Listening to his father’s Richard Tauber CDs was one of his earliest musical memories, and it was there that he first heard Puccini’s La bohème.

Boe’s first public performance, at the age of 14, took place at Fleetwood’s Marine Hall as part of a “Songs from the Shows” program organized by local singing teacher Lottie Dawson. He admitted that despite only singing a few lines, he was really apprehensive.

Boe started working as an apprentice mechanic at the TVR factory in Bispham, Blackpool, when he was 17 years old.

He enjoyed entertaining his coworkers by singing opera arias while polishing automobiles, and one day a client with connections in the music industry overheard him and was so impressed that he suggested Boe audition for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in London. His audition went well, and he quit his job polishing automobiles to pursue a singing career.

Boe has been unable to locate the customer who advised he attend the audition due to the fact that he misplaced the man’s business card.
