J. K. Rowling is the pen name of Joanne Rowling, a British author and philanthropist. She wrote Harry Potter, a seven-volume children’s fantasy series that was published between 1997 and 2007.

The series has sold over 500 million copies worldwide, has been translated into at least 70 languages, and has produced a global media franchise that includes films and video games. Her first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy (2012), was published in 2012. As Robert Galbraith, she is the author of the ongoing crime fiction series Cormoran Strike.

Joanne Rowling was born in Yate’s Cottage Hospital on July 31, 1965. Her parents, Anne (née Volant) and Peter “Pete” James Rowling, had met on a train the year before, sharing a journey from London’s King’s Cross Station to their naval posts in Arbroath, Scotland. Pete was in the British Royal Navy and Anne was in the WREN.

Pete, the son of a machine-tool setter who later opened a grocery store, hailed from a middle-class family. They left the navy to find a country home where they could raise their kid, and they married on March 14, 1965, when they were both 19 years old.

Pete began working as an assembly-line manufacturing worker at the Bristol Siddeley factory after the Rowlings settled in Yate. Pete’s company was acquired by Rolls-Royce, and he rose through the ranks to become a chartered engineer. Anne went on to work as a scientific technician after that. Anne and Pete did not go to university.
