To be born deformed in this world is extremely heartbreaking and disappointing to parents considering the discrimination persons living with disabilities are faced with. The challenges associated with being disabled are particularly problematic for individuals with disabilities.
Persons living with disabilities in many parts of the world are still relegated to begging in the streets. In some parts of the world, any form of disability is still viewed as a curse, a result of one’s sin or the sins of the parents.
This 14 years old boy named Zy was born with one arm and a half leg with only three toes. At a tender age, it was discovered by his parents of his birth defects.
His father refused to send his to a special need school for the disabled hence he purchased prosthetic leg and shoes for his son so that he can compete with normal students.
He succeeded in completing his primary and secondary school education, although person’s with disability do not have equal job opportunities available to them in context of institutionalized settings and community based rehabilitation programmes designed to improve the educational and working environment for people with special needs. this didn’t deter the father and his determined son from pursuing his schooling goals.
Through his father’s support he has set a new record. His father carried him at his back to climb a Mountain in Borneo making him become the youngest disabled person to climb Mount Kinabalu. He was sent to diving school to earn his scuba diving certificate to explore deep sea swimming.
He vowed to compete in the Olympics and through hard work and sacrifice he was finally able to make it to the Paralympics in 2019 at Singapore. He didn’t win but he was the youngest Paralympic there.
He had won several medals and through his father’s support they have set up a foundation to help people like him to Climb the mountain.
This is the life of a determined soul. If he is able to make it, we can also.
