Nupur Sharma is a former Indian politician who served as the official spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi unit. With regular appearances on television discussions, she was perceived as young, enthusiastic, and outspoken. She was expelled from the party in May 2022 after being accused of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad.

Nupur Sharma is from a well-educated family, with several civil workers among her relatives. Her mother is a Dehradun native.

As a student at Delhi University, Sharma joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the Sangh Parivar’s student wing. In 2008, she was elected president of the students’ union. During her tenure, she led an ABVP crowd to heckle SAR Geelani in a faculty seminar titled “Communalism, Fascism, and Democracy: Rhetoric and Reality.” Later that night, she went on a television show and gave rude responses.

Sharma became a lawyer after graduating from the London School of Economics with a law degree. She also joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where she is claimed to have worked with key figures such as Arvind Pradhan, Arun Jaitley, and Amit Shah. She was handed the ticket to run against Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) in the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly election at the age of 30. By 31,000 votes, she was eliminated from the competition.

She was thereafter selected as the BJP’s Delhi unit’s official spokesman.
