Usyk is a Ukrainian professional boxer who has held the WBO junior heavyweight title since 2016.

He rose to the peak of his career when he flawed heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium on 24th September 2021.

Early life and Education

Usyk was born in Simferopol, Crimean Oblast, Ukraine on 17th January 1987.

He took to football in his early years and was trained at the SC Tavriya Simferopol specialized sports school of Olympic reserve (club’s football academy).

In 2002 Usyk switched to boxing. He is a graduate of Lviv State University of Physical Culture.

Amateur Boxing

In the 2006 European Championships, Usyk won his first three matches against unknown opponents, in the semi-final he was defeated by Russian boxer Matvey Korobov.

Fighting further, he win the Stranja cup in 2008 when he was in the light heavyweight division.

He had unsuccessful at the 2008 Olympics when he was defeated by Clemento Russo.

But with perseverance, he made came back at the next Olympic games in 2012 winning the gold medal.

Professional Career

Usyk turned professional when he signed a promotional deal with Klitscho brothers K2 Promotions, fighting in the Cruiserweight division when he was age 26

He made his cameo by defeating Mexican fighter Felipe Romero via a fifth-round knockout.  Little did he know there will be a run a 19 game undefeated.

Usyk won his first title on October 4, 2014, defeating South African boxer Daniel Bruwer via round 7 KO WBO Inter-Continental cruiserweight title.

He later won the WBO Junior Heavyweight champion by defeating polish boxer Krzysztof Głowacki in June 2016.

Usyk is currently a world champion in two weight classes, having held the unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles since defeating Anthony Joshua in September 2021. Having fought 19 games without defeat.

He has the undisputed cruiserweight title from 2018 to 2019, being the first cruiserweight champion to hold all four major world titles.
