Pope Francis makes first public appearance after weeks of being hospitalized

On Sunday, Pope Francis made his first public appearance after spending over five weeks in the hospital.
The pope survived serious cases of pneumonia which threatened his life twice.

The pope offered a Sunday blessing from the balcony of Gemelli hospital in Rome where he has been receiving treatment.

A large crowd came out to see the pope make his appearance with people crowding the entrance of the Gemelli Hospital. Some of the people in the crowed were patients wheeled out from the hospital.

During his appearance, Pope Francis waved from the balcony and smiled. Although he spoke briefly through a microphone, doctors claim his voice had been weakened by the disease.

The pope was subsequently discharged. He will return to the Vatican where he will begin his rest and rehabilitation for at least the next two months.
