In the early 1990s, Leakey began thinking about retiring from palaeoanthropology after suffering from kidney failure.

He was given less than 10 years to live after he suffered a serious illness and was advised to give up his career. But despite the ill health of his wife Margaret, the two remained committed to each other.

He had been a member of Stony Brook University and the director of the Turkana Basin Institute, which provides researchers with research facilities and holds fossils that Leakey collected during his trips.
