Rob Gronkowski, the tight end with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has announced his retirement for the second time.
The 2010 second-round draft pick out of Arizona by the New England Patriots issued a statement on social media announcing the end of his career.
Rob Gronkowski is a former American football tight end who spent 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Gronkowski spent nine seasons with the New England Patriots before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for his final two seasons. He is a four-time Super Bowl champion (XLIX, LI, LIII, LV), a five-time Pro Bowl pick, a four-time First Team All-Pro selection, and a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team as well as the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
Gronkowski played collegiate football at the University of Arizona, where he was selected a Sporting News and Rivals.com Freshman All-American among other honors. Despite just playing two collegiate seasons, he set a team record for receiving yards and averaged 18.8 yards per reception. After missing his junior year due to back surgery, the Patriots selected Gronkowski with the 42nd pick in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
He is an NFL receiver and blocker who holds multiple records, including becoming the first player of his position to lead the league in receiving touchdowns (17 in 2011). Gronkowski also holds the record for most postseason receiving yards by a tight end in his career (1,389). He has 14 career playoff receiving touchdowns, the most by a tight end in Super Bowl history, as well as the most combined receptions (23) and receiving yards (297) by a tight end. Among tight ends, he leads the league in average receiving yards per game (68.3), average yards per target (9.9), and average touchdowns per game (0.69).
