Russell Ebert was an Australian Rules footballer and coach. He is considered one of the greatest players in the history of Australian rules football.
Russell was born on 22 June 1940 in Berri, South Australia. However, he grew up in Loxton with his parents and siblings. Rusell is the fourth of his parent’s ix children. As a teenager, he worked for Bank of Loxton and Savings Bank.
Ebert began playing when he was a teenager. He joined the Waikerie Football club. In 1968, he began his professional career playing for Port Adelaide. He played for 10 years before being transferred to North Melbourne in 1979. He returned to Port Adelaide the following year in 1980 and played till his retirement in 1985. Internationally, he represented South Australia from 1970 to 1983.
After his retirement, Russell began a career as a coach. he coached port Adelaide (1983-1987) and Woodville (1985-1990). He also coached the South Australia team (1996-1998). He also worked as a commentator for FIVEaa in Adelaide.
Russell Ebert died on Noverber 5, 2021 at the ag of 71. He died from acute myeloid leukemia. In July 2022, he was given the Legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
