The Trump Administration pauses $175 million in federal funding to the University of Pennsylvania over trans athletes in women’s sport

The Trump administration has paused $175 million in federal funding to the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) over its inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports.

The university is in danger of losing more funding if it doesn’t change its policies on women’s sports.

While UPenn receives around $1 billion in federal funding annually, the pause is not directly tied to the Department of Education’s recent investigation into Title IX violations.

Trump has also warned schools defying his executive order would lose funding and this is the first major action.

The university previously sparked controversy in 2022 when Lia Thomas, a transgender swimmer, competed on the women’s team and won a national title.

President Trump signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” on Feb. 5 to prevent trans from participating in any form of women’s sports.
