England’s captain and genuine captain has thrown his support behind the the three lads namely: Saka, Rashford and Sancho who lost their penalty kicks and entreated fans to eschew the racist attacks.
He wrote “Three lads who were brilliant all summer and who had the courage to step up and take a penalty when the stakes were high. They deserve our support and backing not the vile racist abuse they’ve had since last night. If you’re abusing anyone on social media you’re not an England fan and we don’t want you.”
In a different world we would be celebrating that we have the best England team in living memory and they have just achieved the best performance in my life time, these players should all be heroes.
But instead rather than celebrating what England have achieved we see a social media full of racist hate, much of it aimed at 3 young men who were cheered to the rafters on Wednesday when they helped us defeat Denmark. We see a manager vilified for perceived mistakes, and we see players called cowards for not taking a penalty.
In addition a friend got tangled up in a nasty incident for calling out a racist comment when the last penalty was missed, and another friend had her day ruined by being subjected to the sort of casual racism I naively thought had died out in the 70s.
And finally I’ve just read the following Facebook comment “Racists are easy to spot, they are the ones with the England flags hanging up”.
I thought as a Country we had made great strides forward, but it seems we still have a long way to go.
