Trump increases tarrif on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50% as reponse to Ontario’s new electricity tarrif

President Trump ordered an additional 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum imports Tuesday in response to Ontario charging Americans in parts of three border states 25% more for electricity.

Trump revealed this via a post on his Truth Social account on Tuesday. This new policy and tariff will be effective from Wednesday.

“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA,” Trump wrote in his post.

According to Trump, the increase in tariffs is a retaliation to Ontario’s 25% tax increase on electricity exports to the US.

The president also declared that if Canada does not lift other “egregious, long-time Tariffs” on the US, he will “substantially increase” tariffs on auto imports on April 2.

In his post, Trump also emphasized his wish to make Canada part of the United States. “The only thing that will make sense is for Canada to become our cherished FIFTY FIRST STATE,” the president wrote.
