Ukraine agree to ceasefire after US promise to resume military aid to the country

Following a successful meeting and agreement, the US will end its pause on military aid to Ukraine and will continue to offer support to the country.

This comes after successful talks took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Ukraine agreed to an immediate, interim 30-day cease-fire that was proposed by the White House representative.

Ukrainian officials arrived at the meeting proposing a limited ceasefire that would prevent both Kyiv and Moscow from conducting long-range aerial and sea-based attacks.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the discussions, emphasized that the U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire would apply to the entire conflict, including the front lines, where the majority of fatalities have occurred.

“You have to stop shooting at each other, and that’s what the president has wanted to see, and that’s the commitment we got today from the Ukrainian side,” Rubio said.

“We’ll take this offer now to the Russians. We hope the Russians will reciprocate,” Rubio added.

Once implemented, the ceasefire can be extended “by mutual agreement of the parties,” said the joint statement issued by Ukraine and the United States.

After the meeting and agreement, President Zelensky made a statement on X emphasizing the need for the agreement and how Ukraine is ready to accept this proposal.

It is unclear whether Moscow will accept the ceasefire terms. The US will now hold talks with Putin and Russia in an attempt to try to get them to agree.
