Brittney Yevette Griner, an American basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), was born on October 18, 1990.

She is currently detained in Russia. In Waco, Texas, she participated in collegiate basketball with the Baylor Lady Bears. She is the only basketball player in the NCAA to have 500 shot blocks in addition to her 2,000 points.

The three-time All-American received the AP Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Final Four Player awards in 2012.

Griner is one of only 11 women to win an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA title, a FIBA World Cup gold medal, and a WNBA title.

When did Brittney Griner fly to Russia?

Brittney Griner flew to Russia in February. On Feb. 17, Griner, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, was taken into custody at Sheremetyevo International Airport near Moscow after her arrival to play in the off-season with UMMC Ekaterinburg, a Russian women’s basketball team where Griner has been a star for the past seven years.

Airport authorities allegedly found four vape cartridges containing hash oil, a concentrated form of cannabis that is illegal in Russia, in Griner’s luggage.
