White couple sentenced to years in jail after adopting black children and using them as slaves

White couples who adopted Black children and used them for slave labor have been found guilty and given maximum sentences.

Donald Lantz, 62, was sentenced to 160 years after being convicted of forced labor, human trafficking, child abuse, and neglect.

His wife, Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, 63, received 215 years after being found guilty of the same charges, plus civil rights violations against the children.

In 2018, the couple adopted five Black children and later relocated to Kanawha County in 2023. Their crimes came to light in October 2023 when a neighbor reported to Child Protective Services that two teenagers were locked in a shed at the couple’s home in Sissonville.

According to authorities, the children had no means to exit the barn on their own, no running water, no bathroom facilities, and no food

The children said they were forced to sleep on the concrete floor of a barn without any mattress or padding. The kids had open sores on their bare feet. They were also dirty and smelled of body odor.
