In a prisoner swap, a former US marine who had been incarcerated in a Russian jail since 2019 has been released.

Trevor Reed is on his way back to the United States, according to US and Russian officials.

In exchange, Russia’s foreign ministry obtained the release of Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian national who was imprisoned on drug trafficking allegations.

“Prayers have been answered,” the Reed family said in a statement.

What are Trevor Reed’s parents?

Joey and Paula Reed are Trevor Reed’s parents.

It’s been three years since Joey and Paula Reed see their son, Trevor.

Prio to their son’s release, Joey Reed said the situation at that time was going “downhill” as communications with their son have diminished since the start of the Russian invasion and on Monday, April 4, he was reportedly sent to a prison hospital. He said he fears that Russian officials may take more action against his son and other Americans currently held in their prisons and is urging President Joe Biden to act.

“Our biggest fear right now is him getting home at all. We’re concerned that they’re going to put additional charges, false charges on him, which that’s typical FSB and or he will die,” Joey Reed told ABC News.

Trevor Reed’s mother Paula Reed also said her family tried to raise awareness for their son’s imprisonment, but they struggled to get any headway due to other topics taking up the headlines, including the start of the pandemic.

“It just seemed like Trevor couldn’t get a break because every time we thought we were going to get some news out there, something bigger was happening in the world that got the attention. So it took us a long time to get our feet running on getting publicity,” she told ABC News.

Who is Trevor Reed?

According to ABC News, Trevor Reed, a former Marine from Texas who had been imprisoned in a Russian prison, has been released, according to statements from the White House and Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, April 26th, 2022.

Trevor Reed and his family have vehemently denied the claims leveled against him. Reed’s release is part of a prisoner swap for Russian national Konstantin Yaroshenko, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on her official Telegram channel.

Yaroshenko was convicted of cocaine smuggling in 2011 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He has vehemently denied the charges levied against him.

“Today, we welcome home Trevor Reed and celebrate his return to the family that missed him dearly.” Trevor is free from Russian detention.” President Joe Biden said in a statement. Trevor has been released from Russian custody.

Trevor Reed: Why Was He Arrested?

Trevor Reed was detained in Russia in 2019 on charges of assaulting a Russian police officer. He was later sentenced to nine years in a Russian jail.
Reed and his family have maintained their innocence, and the United States government has declared him unlawfully imprisoned.
Reed arrived in Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport on Wednesday, according to Russian government media.

Paula Reed is Trevor Reed’s mother. “I’m going to try not to weep because he doesn’t want me to cry,” she said CNN’s Brianna Keilar on “New Day” on Wednesday, April 26th, 2022.

President Biden was praised by Reed’s family for bringing the former U.S. Marine home and for possibly saving his life. Reed’s parents also claimed that they would continue to campaign on behalf of another US Marine, Paul Whelan, who is currently serving a 16-year sentence in a Russian prison.

Reed is thought to be 30 years old, although his precise birth date has not been established. Last month, the president spoke with his family twice about their son’s release. Joey Reed, his father, said he was overcome with emotion while speaking with ABC News.
