Merrill was initially married to Barbara Leeds in 1941. The marriage ended 9 years on July 28, 1950. He got married to Bette Davis and adopted her daughter Barbara from a previous marriage on the same day of her divorce. They then adopted two more children, Margo and Michael. Their marriage however lasted for 10 years as they divorced in 1960.
