Fred Ward was born on December 30, 1942, in San Diego where he grew up. There is no information about his parents and early childhood. He studied acting at New York’s Herbert Berghof Studio.

Before acting, he spent three years in the United States Air Force. He was also a boxer and worked as a lumberjack in Alaska. He also worked as a janitor and short-order cook.

He started acting in 1973 after he completed his studies at Herbert Berghof Studio in Rome. He made his acting debut in two Italian movies produced by Herbert Berghof. In 1975, he made his first American movie debut by Staring in Herts of the West (1975).

Since his debut in American movies, Ward appeared in several Hollywood films playing both lead and supporting roles. Some of the movies he appeared in include Escape from Alcatraz, Southern Comfort, The Right Stuff, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Tremors and Tremors 2: Aftershocks, Henry & June, The Player, Swing Shift, and Short Cuts.

Fred Ward died on May 8, 2022, at the age of 79.

At the time of his death, Fred was married to Marie-France Boisselle. They had been married since 1995.

In August 2013, Marie filed for divorce but they reconciled later that year.

Fred initially had been married to Carla Evonne Stewart in 1965 but it ended in divorce the following year. His second marriage was to Silvia Ward. Silvia is the mother of Fred’s only child and son.
