Peter Dutton is an Australian politician who was born on November 18, 1970. He is a member of the Liberal Party and has served in the Morrison government as Minister for Defence and Leader of the House since March 2021. Since 2001, he has served as a member of cabinet and has represented the Queensland seat of Dickson.

Dutton was the eldest of five children, with one brother and three sisters, and was born in the northern Brisbane suburb of Boondall. His mother, Ailsa Leitch, was a childcare worker, while his father, Bruce Dutton, was a contractor. Dutton graduated from the Anglican St Paul’s School in Bald Hills.

He is the great-great-grandson of Charles Boydell Dutton, a pastoralist squatter.

He is also a descendent of Queensland’s first Sergeant-at-Arms, Captain Richard James Coley, who erected Brisbane’s first private house and provided documentation confirming the mass poisonings of Aboriginal Australians at Kilcoy in 1842.

In 1988, Dutton became a member of the Young Liberals. The next year, he became the Bayside Young Liberals’ policy vice-chair, and in 1990, he became the branch’s chair. In the 1989 Queensland state election, Dutton, then 19 years old, campaigned unsuccessfully as a Liberal candidate in the safe Labor seat of Lytton against Tom Burns (previous state ALP leader).

In 1990, Dutton received his diploma from the Queensland Police Academy. In the early 1990s, he was a Queensland Police officer for nine years, working in the Drug Squad in Brisbane. He also worked with the National Crime Authority and the Sex Offenders Squad. He worked in a construction firm with his father as a side job.

Who is Kirilly Dutton, Peter Dutton’s wife?

Dutton married his first wife when he was 22 years of age; however, the marriage ended after a few months. His eldest child, a daughter, was born in 2002 to another partner, and splits time between her parents in a shared parenting arrangement.

In 2003 Dutton married his second wife, Kirilly (née Brumby), with whom he has two sons.

Kirilly was working 14-hour days as the personal assistant of Sarina Russo, the founder of the Sarina Russo Group, Australia’s largest private sector employment provider, at the time they met, and had “little time for a personal life.”

The MP’s “sense of fun and intrigue” eventually won Kirilly over.

Kirilly would go on to give birth to the couple’s two boys, Harry, 14, and Tom, 12, as well as stepmothering Rebecca, Dutton’s daughter from a previous relationship, at the age of 16.
