During his tenure, the Sri Lankan Armed Forces defeated the Tamil Tigers and killed their leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in 2009, bringing the Sri Lankan Civil War to a close. In December 2006, a suicide bomber from the Tamil Tigers attempted to assassinate him. Rajapaksa launched numerous urban development initiatives after the war.
