Lieutenant Colonel Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a Sri Lankan politician and former military officer who has served as the 8th President of Sri Lanka (7th Executive President of Sri Lanka) since 2019. He previously served as Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development under his elder brother, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, from 2005 to 2015, leading the Sri Lankan Armed Forces to the military defeat of the Tamil Tigers, effectively ending the Sri Lankan Civil War.

Rajapaksa was born into a prominent political family in the Southern Province and attended Ananda College in Colombo before joining the Sri Lankan Army in April 1971. He was commissioned as a signals officer after basic training at the Army Training Centre, Diyatalawa, and afterwards assigned to numerous infantry regiments. [needs citation] He served with the elite Gajaba Regiment in the early phases of the Sri Lankan Civil War, participating in significant offensives such as the Vadamarachi Operation, Operation Strike Hard, and Operation Thrividha Balaya, as well as counter-insurgency operations during the 1987–1989 JVP insurgency.

Before emigrating to the United States in 1998, he took early retirement from the army and moved into the field of information technology. In 2005, he returned to Sri Lanka to help his brother with his presidential campaign, and was named Defense Secretary in his brother’s cabinet. During his tenure, the Sri Lankan Armed Forces defeated the Tamil Tigers and killed their leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in 2009, bringing the Sri Lankan Civil War to a close. In December 2006, a suicide bomber from the Tamil Tigers attempted to assassinate him. Rajapaksa launched numerous urban development initiatives after the war. He stepped aside when his brother was defeated in the 2015 presidential election.

In 2018, he surfaced as a potential presidential candidate for the 2019 election, which he won on a pro-nationalistic, economic development, and national security platform. He is the first person with a military experience to be elected President of Sri Lanka, as well as the first president who has never before held an elected office.
