Grimes is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher.

Her music incorporates aspects of various genres, such as dream pop, electronic, R&B, and hip hop, as well as science fiction and feminist themes. She has five studio albums to her credit.  

Grimes, who was born and bred in Vancouver, began releasing music independently in the late 2000s and released two albums on Arbutus Records in 2010, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa. She later signed with 4AD and became famous after releasing her third studio album, Visions, in 2012. Visions, which features the singles “Genesis” and “Oblivion,” won the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year in the Canadian music business.

Following that, in 2015, she released her fourth studio album, Art Angels, which earned critical acclaim and was named the greatest album of the year by various magazines. Miss Anthropocene, her fifth studio album, was released in 2020.

Boucher was born and raised in the British Columbia city of Vancouver. She is descended from French Canadians (including Québécois), Italians, Ukrainians, and Métis.

Boucher graduated from Lord Byng Secondary School in 2006 and moved to Montreal to study neuroscience and Russian language at McGill University, but she dropped out in early 2011 before completing her degree.
