Liam Dominic Byrne is a British politician who has represented Birmingham Hodge Hill in Parliament since 2004. He was a member of Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Cabinet from 2008 to 2010, and was a member of the Labour Party.

Under Prime Minister Tony Blair, Byrne served in the Home Office as Minister for Police and Counter-Terrorism (2006) and Minister for Borders and Immigration (2006–08). From 2008 to 2009, he was Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Cabinet.

From 2009 to 2010, he served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the absence of Chancellor Alistair Darling. When he left the Treasury Department as Chief Secretary, he famously left a note for his successor that stated, “I’m afraid there is no money.”

Byrne was born in Warrington and attended Burnt Mill School in Harlow for his education. He finished his A levels at Bishop’s Stortford’s Hertfordshire and Essex High School. He went on to study Politics and Modern History at the University of Manchester, where he received a first-class honours degree and was named Communications Officer of the University of Manchester Students’ Union. He also has an MBA from Harvard University’s Harvard Business School, where he was a Fulbright Scholar and graduated with honors.

He worked at Accenture (previously Andersen Consulting, where he worked with Patricia Hewitt) and Rothschild & Co before co-founding e-Government Solutions Group, a venture-backed technology startup, in 2000. He helped lead Labour’s business campaign and advised the Labour Party on the reorganization of its Millbank headquarters in 1996/7.
