TEEN pilot Zara Rutherford is set to become the youngest woman to fly solo around the globe on Monday, 16 January when she lands back in Belgium.

The 19-year-old started her amazing journey five months ago in the Belgian city of Kortrijk.

Shaesta Warez holds the current record, having completed her journey in 2017 at the age of 30.

The British-Belgian adolescent, who comes from a family of pilots, began flying at the age of 14 and received her pilot’s license in 2020.

She is said to have put in over 130 hours of solo flying time in preparation for the record attempt.

Zara just finished her A-Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics, and Physics, and plans to pursue a degree in computer science at university.

She believes that her attempt at the world record would encourage more girls and women to study and work in STEM fields.

What was Zara Rutherford’s journey circumnavigating the globe?

Zara Rutherford set out from Belgium on August 18 on a 32,000-mile journey west.
She has subsequently been to approximately 50 nations on five continents, including the United States, Greenland, Colombia, and South Korea.

According to Reuters, the most difficult part thus far was flying over northern Russia since, if something went wrong, aid would be hours away in sub-zero conditions.

The circumnavigation, which includes 70 scheduled stops and 19 days of relaxation, was supposed to be completed in November of last year, but it was postponed owing to severe weather, visa complications, and COVID limitations.

She had hoped to finish the voyage by Christmas, but due to a flat tyre on her aircraft, she spent the holidays in a quarantined hotel in Singapore and rang in the New Year deep asleep at a hotel in Mumbai when severe winds disrupted her plans.

Zara Rutherford will fly back to Belgium in her custom-built Shark ultralight aircraft on Monday.

When did Zara Rutherford start flying around the globe?

Zara, the daughter of two pilots, started her training when she was 14 years old.
She’s had a pilot’s license since she was 17 years old.

She stated that she has been flying for as long as she can remember, and one of her greatest ambitions is to become an astronaut, in addition to flying across the globe.

The adolescent possesses FAA and UK private pilot licenses, as well as microlight licenses from Slovakia and France. Since 2019, she has been a member of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots.
