Angelou became history on January 10, 2022, when the United States Mint announced that a quarter of her coin had been released into circulation. This made her the first Black woman to be featured on the coin.

This coin is the first of the American Women Quarters Program, which will include notable women from American history. More are expected to follow in 2022 and 2025.

Janet Yellen, Treasury Secretary, stated in a statement that “each time we remake our currency, it gives us the opportunity to say something about the country — what value we place on the currency and how we have progressed as a nation.”

“These coins are a tribute to some of America’s most outstanding women, Maya Angelou included. I’m proud of them.”

Other quarters will honour Sally Ride (a former astronaut who made American history as the first woman to orbit the Earth), Anna May Wong who was an Asian-American actress, Nina Otero Warren who was a politician and suffragette, and Wilma Mankiller who was the leader of the Cherokee Nation.
