DANCING On Ice star Sean Rice has died at the age of 49.
We take a look back at the life of the professional figure skater as fans of the program mourn his death.
Who was Sean Rice?
Sean Rice was a famous figure skater who appeared on ITV’s Dancing On Ice.
He was born in 1972 in Ontario, Canada, and went on to win two Canadian pairs of bronze medals with partner Jodeyne Higgins, as well as four Canadian fours titles.
Before joining Dancing On Ice in 2011, he resigned from competitive skating to tour with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
He was paired with TV personality and journalist Angela Rippon during his debut appearance, but they were knocked out early on.
The next year, he was partnered with Chemmy Alcott, a British Olympic alpine ski racer who was eliminated as the 11th candidate.
With an average score of 20 out of 30, the pair performed eight dances on the broadcast, including one to Pilot’s Magic.
What was his cause of death?
Rice’s death was announced on Twitter by fellow skater Frankie Poultney.
She said, “Today, we lost a truly larger-than-life great-an epic skater, a spouse, a parent, and a 20-year buddy to pro skaters.
“You left us much too soon, but we shall love you forever.”
The reason for the death has not been revealed.
Alexandra Schauman described herself as “utterly saddened and in astonishment” after hearing the news.
She said, “Life is so valuable and fleeting.
We’ve been through it all together, laughed and wept, and skated our hearts out.
There are no words to explain the anguish and disbelief I am experiencing right now, knowing that I will never again hear your laugh, get your all-healing bear hugs, or be able to share the ice and stage with you and Jodeyne, as we had always intended to do one day.
“I miss and adore you, and I’m sure heaven is gorgeous right now since you’re there.”
Was Sean Rice married and did he have children?
Rice was married to Jodeyne, a 47-year-old skating partner who had previously performed on Dancing On Ice.
She finished fourth in 2011 with her partner, soldier Johnson Beharry.
In 2012, she was coupled with singer Chico, and they came in third place.
Sidney, their daughter, was born in October 2013, and the pair married before she was born.
Rice was regarded as a “wonderful husband and poppa bear” by friends.
