He announced his intention to run for President of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, in the 2012 presidential election at the beginning of 2012. He was, however, prohibited from competing in the election due to the validity of the signatures he had gathered to support his campaign.

Star band

He began playing at the age of 12 and eventually became a regular member of the Star Band, Dakar’s most popular band in the 1970s.

N’Dour signed a contract to perform with Ibra Kasse’s Star Band at Kasse’s Miami club in Dakar when he was 16 years old, and he became a phenomenon.

Super Diamono

Youssou N’Dour joined Super Diamono at the age of 15 and toured West Africa with the band in 1975.
Étoile de Dakar

In 1978, N’Dour departed the Star Band to join Étoile de Dakar, a band that contributed significantly to Senegal’s newly growing musical style known as Mbalax, which integrated indigenous Senegalese music into the Latin forms that had previously dominated Senegalese popular music.

The band was short-lived owing to internal issues, despite soon becoming one of the city’s most popular bands. Étoile 2000 and Super Étoile de Dakar were formed, with N’Dour joining the latter.

Super Étoile de Dakar
