Randy Jackson is an American musician, singer, record producer, entrepreneur, and television personality who was born on June 23, 1956.

Jackson began his career as a session musician in the 1980s, playing bass guitar for a variety of jazz, pop, rock, and R&B artists. He went on to work for Columbia Records and MCA Records in the music production and A&R departments. Jackson is most recognized for his roles on American Idol as the longest-serving judge and executive producer of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew.

Jackson was rehired as Journey’s bassist in May 2020, following the band’s abrupt break with founding member Ross Valory.

Jackson had previously played the position on the band’s 1986 album Raised on Radio as well as the tour that accompanied it.

Jackson was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on June 23, 1956, to Julia Jackson, a homemaker, and Herman Jackson, a plant foreman. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Southern University in 1979.
