Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is an American attorney and jurist who has served as a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2021.
Her birth name is Ketanji Onyika Brown. She was born on September 14, 1970, in Washington, D.C. She grew up in Miami Florida along with her parents and siblings.
Ketanji is the eldest child and daughter of Johnny Brown and Ellery Brown. His father Johnny was the chief attorney of the Miami-Dade County School Board. Her mother served as school principal at the New World School of the Arts.
Jackson graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High School in 1988 and graduated from Havard University with an A.B. magna cum laude in 1992.
In 1996, she graduated from the Harvard School of Law with a Juris Doctor cum laude. During her study at Havard, she was a supervising editor of the Havard Law review.
She has served as a district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia from 2013 to 2021 and vice-chair of the United States Sentencing Commission from 2010 to 2014. She has been a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers since 2016.
Ketanji is yet to become the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court after President Joe Biden nominated her to fill Breyer’s vacancy on February 25, 2022.
On February 25, 2022, President Joe Biden nominated Jackson to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, filling the vacancy that is to be created by Breyer’s upcoming retirement.
Jackson will be the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court when sworn in.
