NAHN was founded in 1975 by Dr. Ildaura Murillo–Rohde. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, a member the American Nurses Association was concerned about the lack of Latino nurses in the American Nurses Association. Her goal was to help Latinas get their education, so they could help their communities and themselves.
Dr. Rohde was born in Panama on September 6, 1920 and immigrated to America in 1945. Her nursing career started in San Antonio, Texas. It is a city that is overwhelmingly Hispanic. It was a small town with a shortage of Hispanic nurses, which she discovered. She decided to get a Bachelor of Arts in Psychiatric Mental Health nursing at Columbia University in New York. She earned master’s and doctoral degrees at New York University.
Dr. Rohde was employed by the federal government in 1970 to evaluate educational and research funds. It was the same as San Antonio. There were no Latina nurses in academic settings. She felt inspired to make a difference
The American Academy of Nursing awarded Dr. Rohde a Fellowship, which is one of the highest nursing awards. She was the School of Nursing’s Dean and Professor Emeritus. She was active in nursing and served as a professor, faculty, and Dean at SUNY in Brooklyn. She was also appointed the International Federation of Business and Professional Women’s permanent representative to UNICEF New York.
Dr. Rohde was present at all NAHN conferences, until her illness ended. She wore orchids that her fellow members provided.
The Dr. Ildaura Murillo–Rohde Education Excellence Award by a Hispanic R.N. The NAHN member who has excelled in scholarship and/or teaching nursing is eligible for this award. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to nursing education, research, practice, and scholarship.
